what is avakit?
avakit was created to help you unify all your updated contact details making them available to friends and people around you, with a catch: any of the 1 billion internet users can try to search for you, but you set some general conditions to limit what each person will be able to find about you. This is done by using one contact detail as a lead to another contact detail.

before we explain more, let us give you some examples. These are not exhaustive, they're here to give you an idea of when AvaKIT is useful.
Change of mobile number
Roman just moved to another country to start a new job. He has to change his mobile number which he’s been using for years and that all his good friends, ex-colleagues, head-hunters and business contacts have. He tries to send a couple of SMS’s and emails with his new contact, but it’s difficult to let everybody know.
He wants all the people who had his old number to get his new number.
Roman decides to join AvaKIT and defines his old mobile number as “last known contact” and his new mobile number as “current contact”.
Now anybody trying to call his old number and finds that it doesn’t work anymore can go to AvaKIT.com, search for his old number and get his new number.
Roman Keeps In Touch with his friends. Forever.
Email for mobile number
Dana only gives her personal mobile number to close friends and family. She is also always online, checking her email regularly. Often someone will call her wanting to send an email and asking for her email address. It's a hassle to spell out an email address over the phone or to send it by SMS.
She wants all people who have her personal mobile number to also get her email address.
Dana decides to join AvaKIT and defines her personal mobile number as “last known contact” and her email address as “current contact”.
Now when her friends want to send her an email, they can go to AvaKIT.com, search for her mobile number and they will find her email.
Dana Keeps In Touch with her friends. In many ways.
Karim comes across a unique business opportunity and knows that his ex-colleague Marek who left the company would be interested. He still has Marek’s old email address but finds that it doesn’t work anymore and he receives an ‘undeliverable’ message when he tries to send him the business proposal.
Karim wonders how he can get in touch with Marek.
Karim decides to go to Avakit.com and tries to search for Marek by using his old email. Sure enough, Marek wanted to Keep In Touch and when he left the company, he joined AvaKIT and defined his new email.
Karim finds Marek's new email in the search results and is able to get in touch with him again.
Marek Keeps In Touch with his ex-colleagues. Forever.

who can search for me?
anyone with an internet connection can search for you, they don't need to have an avakit account. The search only becomes selective depending on the conditions you create in the control room.

why can't I search by name?
the idea is that people need to prove they know a person before they can find them, in order to ensure the privacy of our users. If you are trying to find someone, you need to at least know some form of their old or current contact information, e.g. phone numbers, emails, online ID's etc.

why do I keep getting the error message “invalid format”?
you need to make sure that you selected the appropriate type of contact from the drop-down list, and that the format you used matches the format in the example below the input box.

why does it sometimes ask me for the person’s first name?
as an additional security measure and to better protect our users' privacy, you are required to provide the person's first name (e.g. Jane, Joe, etc.) if you are trying to find someone by using a phone number.

how do I decide who can find which parts of my contact information?
it's easy, here are the steps: 1. sign in and go to the control room 2. use the input boxes on the left to define information that people are allowed to use when they try to find you (these can include your old or current contact details) 3. use the input boxes on the right to define the information you want to reveal to them (usually your current contact details) 4. click in one of the fields on the left, then use the checkboxes to link it to as many fields as you like on the right 5. repeat for each field on the left.
for example: if you want your former colleagues to be able to only find your new work contact details, you can link your old work email (on the left) to your new work email and work phone number (on the right), but not to any of your personal emails and phone numbers. Any of the 1 billion internet users can try to find you, but they will only find what you want them to, depending on what info they use to search for you.

why do I keep getting “no changes made” when I try to save?
there are two possible reasons for this message to appear: 1. some of the contact information you entered is not in the right format, make sure it matches the format in the example below the input box (these fields will be marked with a "!" symbol) 2. you forgot to link a field on the left to at least one field on the right. To check, click inside each of the fields on the left one at a time and for each one make sure that there is at least one checkbox ticked (these fields will be marked with an "x" symbol)

how is Avakit different from a social application?
although there might be some overlap in terms of utility, particularly for trying to find someone's updated contact info, the approach is in fact fundamentally different. In a social application, if you want to differentiate between the permissions you give to different people, you need to categorize every person you know by adding them to lists or by creating groups or by joining existing networks. With Avakit that's not the case.
you only need to use the control room once to create general conditions which will then apply to everyone (example of conditions you can set: anyone who knows your work phone number can only find your other work contact details, while anyone who knows your personal mobile number can find everything, etc); and that's it! After that the entire internet community is automatically "categorized" depending on what information they already know about you, without you having to "add" people or to create groups or lists.
avakit is open in the sense that anyone with an internet connection can try to find you whether they have an avakit account or not, but secure in the sense that you control your own permission management through your control room.

will I be charged anything for using or joining Avakit?
no. Avakit is a free service.

what is Avakit ID?
avakit ID is not available in the beta release but will be functional at a later stage. More information to follow.
